Cockfield Church and Glebe Garden

Description

800 year old stone church c 1188, extended 1864 and 1911, in quiet churchyard at east end of Cockfield village. Ancient leper window and priest’s door visible from outside. South aisle and altar available for flexible worship space. There is also the quiet space of the Glebe Garden (next to the Rectory) which celebrates the mining heritage of the area, and has views across Cockfield Fell.

Standard opening times: Services at 9 am and 6 pm most Sundays. Key available Revd Brian Whitley 01388 718584 or 07825 487536 at other times. The Glebe Garden is open every day.

By car: Cockfield lies just off the A688 Bishop Auckland/Barnard Castle road, between Evenwood Gate and Staindrop village. Follow signposts from main road.
By public transport (rail/bus): 6 or 6A to and from Durham every half hour through day; intermittent 85 and 85A buses from Darlington and Bishop Auckland. Nearest rail station Darlington 15 miles or Bishop Auckland 8 miles
On foot: Network of footpaths over Cockfield Fell (largest scheduled ancient monument in north of England) also to Burnthouses and Raby Castle, and across former railway line to Ramshaw and Spring Gardens (on A68 near West Auckland)

Facilities

Wheelchair ramps available for access into church – one step up to chancel.
No toilet facilities at the church but there are some at the pub opposite, the café and the Working Men’s club.
Refreshments – YMCA Community Café at Lipscomb Hall in centre of village (300 yards) – not Saturdays.

Quiet days for individuals or groups – by arrangement.
