Description

St Mary's South Stoneham, recorded in the Domesday Book, is now in a suburb of Southampton, though it retains its character as an ancient country church set in a large churchyard which is a haven for wildlife. Parts of the building go back to Norman times, and there is evidence of a Saxon building on the same site. It is a place which has absorbed people's prayers for centuries, and those who come as pilgrims or visitors readily sense God's presence.

Standard opening times: Sunday services: 8 am Holy Communion (Prayer Book), and 5.30 pm informal Threshold evening service - mostly eucharistic. Wednesdays: Holy Communion at 9.30 am. (Prayer Book on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, Common Worship on all others). Usually open on Tuesday mornings from 9 am to 12 noon. Access can be obtained by phoning Julie Trussler (see below) who can usually be there within 15 minutes. The Church can be used for Quiet Days or groups by arrangement.

St Mary’s is tucked away and is a little hard to find (ideal for a SPP!) although the Church has put up a bright green notice board and signs on Wessex Lane to help. It is down a small unassuming road ‘St Marys Church Close’ which looks as if it is just part of the Halls of Residence Car Park and branches off Wessex Lane at the point when Wessex Lane turns through a right angle.

By Car: M27 at Junction 5 take A335 exit to Southampton/Eastleigh. At roundabout, take the 2nd exit A335 heading to Eastleigh. At roundabout, take 2nd exit onto Wide Lane. At roundabout, take 2nd exit, still Wide Lane. Almost immediately turn left at traffic lights into Wessex Lane. Turn left at St Marys Church Close. (for full route with Google Maps get directions to St Marys Church Close Southampton, and see also map on parish website)
By Rail: Nearest major station is Southampton Airport Parkway, around 20 minutes walk to St Mary’s. Or get connection to Swaythling Station, about 5 minutes walk to St Mary’s (although there is only one train per hour).
By Bus: From Parkway station, U1C bus (from Platform 2 exit) to Wessex Lane Halls of Residence. From Southampton Central, U1A bus (from the Platform 4 exit) to Wessex Lane Halls.

Facilities
