Thornborough Methodist Church Garden, Buckinghamshire

Description

The peaceful garden is situated at the back of the Church and is easily accessed through the front gate, down the path to the right of the building. The garden has been lovingly nurtured over the years by faithful church members (and their spouses). It is a tranquil and prayerful spot with a little stream that runs at the bottom and beyond the line of trees there is gently sloping pasture that adds to the peaceful scene. There are a couple of benches to rest awhile in the lower lawned area that is surrounded by herbaceous borders, and on the higher level some old pews that nestle against the back of the chapel. The whole garden is a suntrap surrounded by fence and hedge and is not overlooked at all. There is a Perspex box attached to the side of the chapel just before the garden which contains some devotional material.

The Chapel celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003 and still has congregations of twenty to thirty each week. It is often used as a place of retreat for other churches and by community groups. Every Wednesday there is a ‘Drop In’ coffee morning 10.30 am - 12.30 pm every week, a lunch for older folks and a thriving messy church every month. The village itself is stunning, full of history and appears in the Domesday Book, predominantly made up of the typical stone houses of North Bucks, with a wonderful village school and community.

Standard opening times: The garden is open at all times.
Chapel services are on Sundays at 11 am (N.B. occasionally there is a joint service held in St. Mary’s, the parish church, a couple of hundred metres from the Methodist church at the same time of day)
