Description

An ancient church which has stood on a hill for over a thousand years, providing a peaceful haven away from the villages that surround it with stunning views over the Hampshire countryside. In 1304 the Knights Hospitallers acquired the church with the right to appoint the incumbent and in 1348 North Baddesley became the headquarters of the Knights Hospitallers (Order of the Knights of St. Johns), remaining there until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. There is an impressive Hospitallers tomb in the church by the left of the altar. As is common the church has been repeatedly amended and rebuilt over the years. In 1986 major re-furbishment took place and the nave roof was impressively decorated in the medieval style. On entering the church you will see in front of you a stained glass window, designed and made by Sophie Hacker clearly showing Christ's scarred hand in it. This is a pilgrim church steeped in history and prayer. In November 2018 to commemorate 100 yrs since the ending of WW1, the church put on a spectacular poppy cascade with over 4,000 knitted and crocheted poppies and received local and international recognition. It has become known by many as 'The Poppy Church'!
