St. Laurence, Pittington

Description

Pre-conquest church in peaceful locality at Hallgarth, isolated from present settlements. Linked to Durham Cathedral by its Norman architecture. There are wall paintings celebrating St. Cuthbert’s life, a tomb cover to Christian the Mason who created Norman arches, and the pre-Norman framework is very obvious. St Laurence is a Parish Church serving High and Low Pittington Littletown, and a United Benefice with St. Mary Magdalene Belmont. It is well concealed by mature trees in large churchyard sloping to the South.

Sunday services at 9.30 am and some Joint Benefice services with St Mary Magdalene, Belmont. Saturday opening 2-4 p.m. from May to end September. (All year, by arrangement.) Open for private prayer Thursdays 10-11.00 am (early Spring to late Autumn). Check Facebook for summer prayers dates, summer Saturday afternoon cream teas, and Open Church weeks during year.

By car: From Durham, A690 N.E. 1 mile after Carrville intersection (A1 junction 62) cross dual carriageway at Rainton Gate, signed Low Pittington. Downhill to crossroad at Blacksmiths pub. Straight across to Sherburn road. Next turning left to Hallgarth Manor, right at Manor entrance, down lane to church.

By public transport : 204, 208 from Durham Bus station to High Pittington crossroads - pass school field to Hallgarth Manor - church at end of lane marked “Hallgarth”.

Cycle route: The 4½ mile Pilgrim walk from Durham Cathedral is also a cycle route (except last ½ mile).

This 10th century church is full of pictures, stories, patterns and shapes, in stone, wood and glass. It can make a family visit - there are refreshments to enjoy along with the activities. The trail encourages children to get the BIG picture from the SMALL details, TEST their observation, SEARCH for details, DRAW and DESIGN, and THINK BIG with some puzzling objects
